i guess the same thing happens on fedi too - activitypub is huge and covers a lot more than what masto or whatever does

and then once you do implement it you have to jump over hoops to make it work with existing software

not to mention the extra work to handle stuff like moderation, frontends, etc

Show thread

recall the one time i tried writing my own federated chat protocol, and the software (backend and frontend for it)

and gave up midway through because progress was incredibly slow and i realized i was certainly not ready for the huge undertaking i just made

Show thread

is this protocol cursed or are we just all realizing that it's too much for one person to handle

Show thread

it seems to me that every fedi-related project that wants to "make fedi better" just fails miserably

edit this is probably not a listview issue, setting hexpand to false on the coverart explicitly fixed it

Show thread

i really, really want to like listviews. but they just keep doing this. and it's just so much easier in every way to use listboxes/flowboxes etc

Show thread

why? because listviews can manage adjustments. no idea what it does with them

Show thread

i am quite sure that what i've just presented is a bug, but the other positioning woes i mentioned all have to do with it being horrible about scrolling views, which i am quite sure is intended behavior

Show thread

i have an entire blog post's worth of ListView/GridView Positioning Woes, this is just the latest in a looong long legacy of listviews screwing me over every time i want to use them

Show thread

in case you're wondering how today is going: all of these are styled the same, the data box has hexpand

(please do not reply to this telling me how to fix it i know how to fix it)

Show thread

what if you, wanted to update nextcloud, but nextcloud said "Step 3 is currently in process. Please reload this page later."

Show thread

i could file a bug report for it but

1. it's probably just misconfigured on my end
2. it's different every time
3. it's such a minor inconvenience that it just wouldn't be worth the hassle

Show thread

i always end up having to use the cli updater, and even then it sometimes fails to realize that there even is an update even though the web ui says there is

Show thread

do nextcloud web updates fail like half the time for everyone else or is my luck just that bad

in some cases you can find a deleted video's metadata on 3rd party websites but it's much more convenient and reliable to save it in the video

Show thread

pro tip: if you are ever planning to archive any youtube videos remember to --embed-metadata and --embed-thumbnail

walking up to oxide offices and asking them for their smallest individual server
